The upcoming Broadway production of Tina -- The Tina Turner Musical has found its Ike Turner.
The Last O.G. star Daniel J. Watts will portray the famed musician, opposite Tony-nominated Adrienne Warren, who played Tina Turner in the London production of the musical and will reprise her role in the New York City version.
Watts was among the general cast announcements made for the upcoming production. Watts and Warren join Dawnn Lewis as Zelma, and Myra Lucretia Taylor as Gran Georgeanna.
Nkeki Obi-Melekwe, who is portraying Tina in the current London production of the musical, will take on the role during some Broadway performances as well.
Directed by Phyllida Lloyd, the director of the acclaimed Margaret Thatcher biopic The Iron Lady and the blockbuster movie musical Mamma Mia!, the production follows the early beginnings Anna Mae Bullock, later known as Tina Turner, and her husband Ike Turner as they rose to fame in the 1960s.
This is latest project for Watts, who in addition to starring opposite Tracy Morgan in the TBS series The Last O.G., has appeared on such other TV shows as Amazon's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, NBC's Blindspot and HBO's The Deuce and Vinyl. His Broadway credits include Hamilton, In the Heights and Memphis.
Tina -- The Tina Turner Musical begins previews at Broadway's Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on October 12 and officially opens on November 7. Visit TinaOnBroadway.com for more information.
