Elton John's "The Devil Wears Prada" musical gets a director

March 13, 2019 12:00 PM

ABC/Randy HolmesWe're one step closer to seeing Elton John's latest stage musical.

It's just been announced that Tony-winner Anna D. Shapiro will direct The Devil Wears Prada, a musical based on the hit 2006 film starring Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway.  Elton is writing the music for the production, while lyrics are being penned by composer Shaina Taub.

Shapiro, the artistic director of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company, won a Tony in 2008 for directing the play August: Osage County.

So far, there's no production timeline or casting.

The movie and the show The Devil Wears Prada are based on the 2003 novel by Lauren Weisberger.  It's the story of Andrea "Andy" Sachs, an aspiring journalist who lands a job as an assistant at Runway fashion magazine.  While catering to the whims of demanding editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly, she finds friendship, romance and, eventually, professional fulfillment.

The Devil Wears Prada will be Elton's fifth musical, following The Lion King, Aida, Billy Elliot and Lestat. If you've never heard of that last one, it's probably because the 2006 show, based on the Anne Rice's The Vampire Lestat, wasn't a big success.
